Former conductor of the National Opera Aivar Mäe elected municipal mayor of Põhja-Pärnumaa | New
In a speech to the city council, Mäe, who was nominated as a candidate in the “Meie Vald” (“Our Municipality”) electoral alliance, said that the municipality of Põhja-Pärnumaa should be a good partner of the state and create the conditions to support entrepreneurship and contribute more to education. He also stressed the importance of also contributing to the development of cultural life in the municipality.
Mäe got 15 of 21 votes from the city council on Wednesday.
Councilor Eva Kruuse, who had been appointed to the post by the electoral alliance “Inimeste Eest” (“In the name of the people”), obtained five votes.
Speaking to ETV news program ‘Aktuaalne kaamera’, Mäe said he mainly resides in Põhja-Pärnumaa, but was not yet aware of the municipality’s concerns and was therefore beginning work with a blank slate. He admitted that if he had been aware of all the problems in the municipality, he might not have been a candidate for mayor after all.
“In this time of crises, where crises come and go, it’s actually a challenge, and if you come out alive, it’s a big deal,” he said.
The former municipal mayor of Põhja-Pärnumaa, Rein Kontus, resigned in mid-June after a vote of no confidence against him passed in the municipal council. Meanwhile, deputy municipal mayor Tarvi Tasane served as acting municipal mayor.
Resigned following allegations of sexual harassment
In August 2020, Aivar Mäe resigned as director of the Estonian National Opera after being accused by National Opera employees of sexual harassment – allegations which were first reported in the media Estonians in June, prompting a police investigation.
The Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) fined Mäe €400 in connection with the case, which was later overturned by the court.
After leaving her post at the National Opera, Mäe worked as a project manager for Viimsi Haldus and was a consultant for the construction of a new cultural center in Viimsi.
The Põhja-Pärnumaa City Council has set the new City Mayor’s monthly salary at €3,500, marking an increase from the previous €3,200.
