During an interaction with municipal leaders in Kolkata, West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed concern about the health of one of these leaders. “Why is your belly getting so big? Aren’t you exercising?’ Banerjee interrupted the chef. To which he replied, “My sugar and blood pressure levels are good. I don’t take any medication.”
Banerjee was unconvinced and inquired about his diet. The man admitted to having lunch with fried food. Visibly surprised by this revelation, the chief minister said, “How can you eat fried things? You will never reduce your weight! Not one to be put off by the chief minister’s reprimands, the man was quick to reply that he was exercising for an hour and a half every day.
Banerjee didn’t back down either. She asked him to demonstrate the exercises he performs. The chef proceeded to demonstrate some movements of Pranayama. “Pranayama doesn’t help lose weight,” she told him.
Troubled by the chief minister’s response, the chief said he performs a thousand Pranayama moves every day. Banerjee then asked him to do a full set on stage and even promised to give him 10,000 rupees if he did. The man refused saying that Pranayama should only be performed early in the morning or after sunset.
‘Impossible! No way to exercise daily. If you did, you wouldn’t have that massive belly,” Banerjee remarked.
