Werewolves – “We’re Better Than You”

As if pandemic and bushfires weren’t enough to distract, Australia werewolves bounce back quickly from their last outing with the new From cave to grave. It’s a total misanthropic blast of more of the same blackened technological death they’ve done so well, with Psychooptic‘s drummer back in the seat, but despite a strong adherence to hyper-precision, it’s a punk/anarchic mess.

Astral Grave – “Inertia (Crashing Through the Gates of Eternity)”

Recently interviewed on Anthony Bartkewiczit is Severe seizures show March 18, Denver astral tomb first seem like a death metal caterwauling tarpit reaching into space. their last Soulgas on Blood Harvest however finds them as expansive as they are overwhelming, brutal passages leading to stumbling explorations. The gory, gritty moments unfold slowly in the cosmic dust, nods to the Butthole surfers and thirst for bestial war sharing the same boundaries.

Municipal waste – “Grave Dive”

After releasing it live on their last tour, ‘Grave Dive’ plummets as a new Municipal waste single, an ode to digging up dead fans and throwing them offstage. Such is the spirit of the singer (and once Gimme DJ) Tony Foresta, it’s a slammin’ party wherever they go. Razor-sharp riffs sit alongside its unmistakable bark, one-on-one thrash coolness all around. Their new album electrified brain hits this summer.

Without God – “Cormorant”

The visually wild video set in a fiery red crypt sets it up nicely, India Impious on their release in November states of chaos triumphs in a death/thrash mix of iron grip. The evolution of ’80s-style thrash featured here shows that this is a band that’s not just about nostalgia, but high-level dissection and mutation. On this track, the hyper-intense pounding turns into a truly terrifying vocal flurry, and it’s all over.

GGGOLDDD – Invisible

The challenge of addressing victimization through music is a delicately woven tapestry, this Dutch unit led by Milena Eva projects working through his own trauma with equal parts power and vulnerability of his ordeal, with a stripped-down lyricism that is far from candy-coated. Musically, they wowed everyone at Roadburn with a combination of austere skeletal techno, illuminating acapella moments and dizzying explosions of dissonant string sections sliding along the wall. A triumphant work of art and a band to be reveled in.
