Anyone who attends Parkland events has likely had the opportunity to meet Commissioner Bob Mayersohn.

Whether on the football field for Parkland Buddy Sports, reading stories to elementary school children, or browsing the farmers market, Mayersohn can always be found at gatherings around town.

Commissioner since 2016 and a constant advocate for residents of all ages, it was fitting to name a day after him.

At May 18 City commission meeting Mayor Walker proclaimed it Bob Mayersohn Day, and dignitaries including state Rep. Christine Hunschofsky and Congressman Ted Deutsch (via video) praised Mayersohn for his role newly elected president of the Broward League of Cities.

“Bob’s installation as chairman of the countywide organization is another example of his commitment to public service and to the residents of the City of Parkland and Broward County,” Walker said. .

The Broward League of Cities is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and addressing issues facing the county’s 31 cities and towns. Mayersohn explains it as a leadership role providing information and education to city officials.

“For those of you who don’t know what the Broward Towns League does, they help advocate, so that all towns in Broward County have a voice,” Hunschofsky said.

The league identifies issues affecting day-to-day operations, including county, state and federal legislation. Specialized committees research and recommend policies affecting education, housing, economic concerns and municipal services.

“When Bob moved to Florida in 1983, he immediately got involved in community causes,” Deutsch said, “He went above and beyond to exemplify what it means to serve his own community throughout his tenure in the public service.”

Mayersohn was picked up by the show of appreciation but especially by the American flag flown in honor of his Broward League of Cities swearing-in ceremony, at Deutsch’s request.

“Having a flag on the Capitol was really special, and it was my birthday,” Mayersohn said.

Hunschofsky said Bob would do an “amazing job” representing residents.

“This is an exciting opportunity not only for me personally, but also for our commission, city staff and our residents,” Mayersohn said. “I can’t wait to not only kiss[ing] our strengths, but to understand our vulnerabilities as we explore new ways to overcome the barriers our cities face. »
