A court in Rajshahi on Monday placed the mayor of Katakhali municipality in Rajshahi, Abbas Ali, in pre-trial detention in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

Rajshahi-2 Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court Judge Shankar Kumar issued the order when Deputy Inspector Shahabul Islam, also the investigating officer in charge of the case, presented him to the court with a remand prayer. of 10 days.

The court also rejected Abbas’s request for bail.

Lawyer Pervez Toufik Zihadi represented the mayor while lawyer Aslam Sarkar, Mozaffar Hossain and Musabbirul Islam represented the petitioner.

On December 1, Abbas Ali was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at a hotel in Dhaka.

The detention comes days after he was sentenced under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for his alleged derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu and his announcement to stop construction of a mural of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahmna in the city.

“It will be a sin if I allow the construction of the Bangabandhu mural to be built (…) it does not comply with Islamic Sharia laws,” he said in an audio clip.

Abdul Momin, Councilor of Ward 13 of Katakhali Municipality, filed a complaint against Abbas under the Digital Security Act (DSA) at the Boalia Police Station, following which an FIR (first report information) was filed that day.
